Meeting Halfway Down the Aisle at Twine Restaurant
James and Angharad got married at Twine Restaurant in August last year when weddings were allowed but international and inter-state travel was banned. Not ideal when you are from New Zealand and all your family lives there, as in Angharad’s case.
Since early in the pandemic, there was a lot of government talk of a travel bubble with our New Zealand neighbours and so we had high hopes that all would work out, but as their wedding date got closer, there was still no Trans-Tasman agreement.
What an awful situation to be in…..to be faced with the agonizing decision of postponing (for a year) or going ahead without your family and many friends present.
The couple decided to keep their wedding date as planned with many of the guests including Angaharad’s parents, watching on Zoom.
[Side note- if they did postpone for a year, the current restrictions mean no weddings are going ahead so with hindsight, their decision proved to be the right one for them]
When Angahard appeared at the top of the aisle, it was emotional for everyone (not least for her father in NZ I’m sure). It’s not how she envisaged that moment and it must have been somewhat painful for her BUT she didn’t let it show: she was a vision of warmth and love with a huge smile on her face – brave woman that she is!
When she locked eyes with James, he left his spot beside me and walked up to meet her. Then they walked down the aisle together.
It was a touching gesture of support that will forever mark the start of their marriage journey as a team, facing whatever challenges life throws at them, together.
Marrying one of my friends
I’d never heard of the name Angharad until I became friends with one through my book club.
Angharad is a Welsh name that means ‘MUCH LOVED’. It’s a very fitting description for my friend who I got to marry to her partner James last year.
During the ceremony, I always describe the best qualities of the two people getting married, as seen through the eyes of their partner, the one that knows them best.
It’s such a delightful part of the ceremony. I get to shower the person with compliments and their friends and family normally nod enthusiastically in agreement.
For Angharad, I couldn’t help myself- I snuck in an extra paragraph describing what an amazing person she is from MY perspective and what a great support she has been to me since I’ve known her. In that special moment, we both shed a little tear, bonded together forever.
How lucky I am to be involved in celebrating my friends’ weddings. It makes my job even more meaningful and memorable than I thought possible.
