Today another Stockton Breakwall memorial plaque was added for Beverley Moloney. RIP.
If you’ve ever been for a stroll on Stockton Breakwall, you’ll know one of the things that makes it so lovely is the unique perspective you get looking back on Nobby’s Breakwall and the city of Newcastle. The other is the collection of memorials for departed loved ones decorating several of the rocks.
Memorials of all shapes, sizes, and colours line the path. Some are rudimentary (simple hand-painted lettering), others are more formal (engraved plagues). All carry heartfelt messages relating to people that are no longer with us.
Handmade Plaque for Bev Moloney
Since doing Bev’s funeral last year, I’ve stayed in touch with the family. While reminiscing about Bev, her husband Chris mentioned that they’d had a particularly memorable holiday in Stockton and that the place held lots of fond memories for the family. I told him about the memorials on the breakwall and asked him to consider whether something like that would be a fitting tribute to Bev.
I was delighted when Chris contacted me a few months later to say that Bev’s daughter Symantha had made a beautiful ceramic plaque in honour of her Mum and would I like to join them in placing it on the Breakwall.
So today, armed with some tiling putty, we walked along the wall until we found a suitable spot. It has a direct line of sight to Symantha’s apartment in Newcastle. Sam will be able to sit on her balcony and see the Stockton Breakwall. She might even be able to make out the Stockton Breakwall memorial plaque for her mother on her telescope.
What a beautiful way to link the past to the present. A final gift to Bev: an everlasting tribute to a life well lived and life worth remembering.
