I’m not talking formal, semi-formal, cocktail, casual. This Gunners Barracks wedding had a colour palette of shades of navy, blue, and cream. It was divine. Undoubtedly the most stylish wedding I’ve ever been to.
So if you like the look of an all white or one colour wedding but fear your guests won’t play ball, then this could be a realistic alternative to get that chic affect.
If you’re nervous about seeming over-demanding about your dress code request, don’t be. There is a way to go about it that won’t put your guests off. Don’t decide at the last minute. Best to put it on your save-the-dates or wedding website. Be encouraging with the wording rather than demanding.
Ultimately, your guests will decide if they want to partake, but if you are lucky, you’ll end up with a wedding as stylish and elegant as Nano & Andrew’s.
That’s me giving some last-minute instructions to the bridal party before the ceremony starts, reminding them about where to stand, when to walk etc but most importantly…………TO FEEL THE LOVE!⠀
Now I know where Juan gets his superb dress-sense from from: just have a look at his stylish parents! ⠀
His Mum Agustina is wearing a traditional Spanish lace veil called a ‘mantilla’.
I try to build a good rapport with my couples and to get to know their personalities and sense of humours. I actually made a pretty outrageous joke here but I knew Juan and Andrew well enough, to know they’d find it funny. This is my favourite photo from 2018 because it shows me at my best, creating a memorable moment WITH an awesome couple. Like I always say, it’s a collaboration.
Whether you normally bawl at the drop of a hat or can’t even shed a tear during The Notebook, there’s a good chance that you might cry on your wedding day.
So many couples confide in me that they are worried about crying during the ceremony, as they feel it’s a bit embarrassing. I disagree completely. There ain’t no shame or embarrassment in crying on your wedding day. Shedding a few tears just shows that you understand how important this milestone really is.

What feelings does this photo evoke for you?
Our societal model of masculinity often discourages affection.
What a beautiful expression of love + masculinity this is.
This was n’t the kiss moment. That was full of fireworks!
No, this was one of those in-between moments: not scripted, anticipated or expected in any way.
This was Nano’s urge to cover Andrew in a soothing balm, at the exact moment that he needed it.
It shows a level of emotional awareness and empathy that highlights how dependent we are on our partners.
So, let us value a standard of healthy masculinity that loves and breathes openly- a nourishing, connective masculinity that allows a fuller range of emotions and behaviours.
I didn’t have my rescue dog Sasha when I got married but if I could do it all again, I’d definitely include her. Pets play such an important role in people’s lives: I can understand why couples want their fur-babies to be there and involved on their wedding day.
My advice to couples now is that as long as you understand that everything may not go exactly to plan on the day and you are relaxed about it, then you should go for i
Unless of course, you think your dog won’t enjoy it. If your dog is anxious or easily excitable, they may find the whole experience overwhelming and you should put their needs above your own wants.
Thankfully Nano’s dog Barry approved of the union when he heard the news of the mens’ engagement and agreed to be the couple’s ring bearer.
Read the blog I wrote about dogs in the wedding party.
Photographers generally loath them. It’s annoying herding people like cats and it can take up valuable time. There is inevitably someone who has wandered off to the toilet. Neither the photographer or the celebrant wants to get their bossy pants on to tell the guests to take off their sunnies, but one of us has to. It’s unlikely you will print the photo as everyone’s faces are just going to look like dots.
On the other hand, how often to get a chance to have a photo with all the important people in your life?….not many!
For this reason, I’m still a fan. In this case half of Nano and Andrew’s guests were from overseas and they are not likely to ever have this combination of people around them again. I reckon the group shot is still worth doing.
What do you think? Love ’em or think they are a waste of time??

Julie ensured that our wedding ceremony at Gunners Barracks was as magical as we had imagined it.
Her attention to detail and professional approach, but most importantly her love for what she does strongly came through and were very much appreciated by us, our families and friends.
She took us on a journey and extracted from us the base for a most amazing ceremony.
Julie was not just a celebrant providing a service, but a friend helping us strengthen our bond for the rest of our lives.
